Maryland offers golfers over 200 public, private and semi-private courses. The quality of Maryland golf courses has attracted several professional events, as well as amateur championships.
Since it opened in 1924, the Congressional Country Club in Bethesda (Montgomery County) has welcomed three men's U.S. Opens (1964, 1997, and 2011) and the 1976 PGA Championship. Hosted by Tiger Woods, the AT&T National also was played there from 2007 to 2009, and in 2012 and 2013. Renamed the Quicken Loans National in 2014, this PGA Tour event will be held at the Congressional County Club in early July of even-numbered years and at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm in Potomac (Montgomery County) in 2017.
From 2005 through 2009, the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Championship was held in Havre de Grace (Harford County) at the Bulle Rock Golf Club. The tournament is one of four majors on the LPGA Tour.

Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills (Baltimore County) hosted the inaugural women's International Crown event July 24-27, 2014. Over four days, teams from eight countries competed in matches to win the designation of best golf nation in the world. Caves Valley Golf Club also hosted the 2002 U.S. Men's Senior Open Championship, and the 2005 Men's and 2009 Women's NCAA Championships.

Baltimore Country Club in Timonium (Baltimore County) hosted the 2007, 2008, and 2009 Constellation Senior Players Championship. In October 2010, it was held at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm in Potomac (Montgomery County). This tournament is one of five major championships on the
PGA Champions Tour.
From October 4-7, 2012, TPC Potomac hosted the Neediest Kids Championship for the Web.Com Tour (formerly Nationwide Tour). The event, renamed the Mid-Atlantic Championship, also was held at the course May 27 - June 2, 2013.

Founded in 1921, the Maryland State Golf Association (MSGA) promotes the game of golf in Maryland. Each year, it sponsors 15 State championships for men, women, and juniors. As the representative of the United States Golf Association (USGA) in Maryland, the MSGA conducts qualifying rounds for USGA National Championships: U.S. Open; U.S. Amateur; and U.S. Senior Amateur.
